This time Sunbeam Yachts has really excelled themselves beyond expectations; the family company have created their own competitor within their highly successful range of cruising yachts, especially with their new SUNBEAM 42.1.

The classic SUNBEAM attributes, comfort, safety, long-lasting structure, have been the basis of their high-value yachts for decades. The family company has been in business since 1838 and dedicated to the boat building since 1952.

The latest top model has been developed by the proven team Schöchl/Nissen, who have created a top-class Sports Luxury Cruiser – the SUNBEAM 42.1

Safety is a must! Comfort is an added advantage. Even though the target clientele expects only the best, with the SUNBEAM 42.1 they get more than expected

Design, Construction

-Nautical design by Georg Nissen

-Interior design and deck design by Manfred Schöchl

-Deck design, ergonomics and interior from Schöchl Yachtbau

-Light and airy design

-Ergonomic

The concept of a centre cockpit has been used in SUNBEAM yachts since 1975. It has proved to be the best design for ocean-going cruising yachts.

Schöchl have worked with the well-known international yacht designer, Georg Nissen, for many years. Combined with the competence of Manfred Schöchl, who is responsible for the ergonomic design of the deck and interior, the combination has resulted in a great success. The new SUNBEAM 421 is a yacht which will not only convince the customer, but also surprise them positively.

Technical and design details like ergonomics and functionality are important for safe and sportive sailing. These are the basics of a perfect Sports Luxury Cruiser.

The hull design is a result of long experience in yacht building and modern hydro-dynamic knowledge. The shape of the hull, as known in classical boats, in combination with a steep stem, results in a long waterline and increased buoyancy.

The layout of the deck and cockpit is typical of a Sports Luxury Cruiser and the yacht can easily be handled by a short handed or single handed crew. The high weight stability of the boat is achieved by the high ballast / weight ratio resulting in a safe and comfortable sailing experience for the crew.

The large sky lights in the coach roof and panorama windows on the side give the impression of a raised saloon. The exclusive atmosphere is emphasised by the mahogany interior.

The yacht has a head room of at least 1.90 m up to 2.01 m throughout the cabin. Fittings in the interior include a perfect ventilation system; the aft (main) cabin alone has seven windows, port holes and hatches.

Retention of Value:

One of SUNBEAM’s most important value factors, confirmed by the second-hand market value of the yachts time and again, are mentioned below. Here are a few technical details that make Schöchl different from other boat builders.

-The hull is laminated in one piece – assuring rigidity for the life of the yacht.

-ISO NPG polyester resin for osmosis protection and insulation

-Hull strengthened by special glass fibre inner shell (liner) structure

-Underwater primer for additional osmosis protection

-Gel-coat hand painted – guarantees long-lasting and high quality finish

-The bulkheads are extensively bonded to the hull

-Deck is reinforced where the deck fittings are mounted

-Special marine plywood finished in semi-gloss using a triple-varnish process

-Deck fittings made of high grade stainless steel

Isophtal resins are used for the glass fibre parts. A long lasting and high quality surface is attained by multi layers of hand painted Isophtal resin gelcoat.

The inner shell (liner) is extensively bonded, strengthening the structure of the hull and reducing torsion. An aluminium framework is the basis for the saloon floor.

Safety:

-Ballast: 3.760 kg = 36,7% ballast to weight ratio

-Rudder stock: Solid high grade stainless steel 75mm in V4A steel

-Collision water-tight bulkhead in bow

-Tanks: placed close to the centre of gravity

-Extra collision protection for the hull in the keel area

-Hand rails in high grade stainless steel on deck

-Stepped transom with foldable ladder for swimming

A water tight collision bulkhead behind the anchor locker is part of the impact protection of the bow.

The built-in steps on the transom facilitate easy boarding. The foldable ladder can be easily reached by swimmers from the water.

Water and diesel tanks are mounted in the keel area near the centre of gravity, providing additional stability.

Cables under the waterline are imbedded in silicone and protected by shrink tubes.

Hoses are fitted with double hose clamps. Hoses in the toilets and in the heating system are fitted with venting loops.

There is a central drainage pipe in the engine room, which reduces the number of sea-cocks.

The toilets are fitted with special black water hoses. The holding tank is made of plastic and fitted with an access-port for cleaning. The holding tank can be emptied via gravity drain or evacuated (pumped out) via a deck fitting.

The bilge system has two bilge pumps, one of which can also be activated from the pedestal.

Additional safety is accounted for by a special aperture for accessing the engine compartment with a fire extinguisher. There is a fire blanket provided for the gas stove and fire extinguishers are mounted inside and on deck.

The gas line for the stove is specially secured by electromagnetic valves, a second manual valve, and a lock on the stove.

The diesel engine is fed from two tanks, which are joined via a central filter system.

The rudder bearing is made of composite bearing materials and additionally sealed with gaskets and secured by a sealing boot.

A skeg ensures maximum efficiency of the rudder blade during heeling.

There is a special bilge sump, which reaches into the lowest point of the hull in the keel area.

The keel is keyed into the hull. This connection of keel and hull absorbs any occurring forces in case of grounding – another safety feature of the SUNBEAM 42.1.

The emergency tiller is mounted on deck and operable from the cockpit.

The hull is protected, particularly against osmosis, with ISO-NPG gelcoat and additional water-repellent coats of primer.

With a keel weight of 3,760kg the yacht has a ballast of nearly 37%. This weight is fixed by 20 high-grade M20 stainless steel bolts. The rudder stock is in high-grade stainless steel (H7). The rudder blade is fully laminated, foamed and strengthened with high-grade stainless steel plates inside.

Hull and deck are bonded with a special acrylic adhesive and bolded together.

The hull is additionally insulated and protected against temperature extremes.

The ergonomic seating arrangement is perfect. There is ample room in the cockpit for the whole crew. An acrylic windscreen protects against wind and weather.

Two storage areas are easily accessed for items of frequent use.

All halyards and lines lead to the cockpit and can be stored in a separate locker for ropes. There is no need for leaving the cockpit for reefing the mainsail and jib.

In addition the helmsman can easily reach the main sheet, the traveller and the jib sheet – a must for single handed sailing. The ergonomic layout of the helmsman position is perfect – the seat is comfortable and protected , even in bad weather conditions.

When mooring, the helmsman stands at the pivot point of the yacht; thus he can feel the movement of the boat immediately and can react accordingly. The helmsman also has a perfect overview of the yacht and surrounding area from this central position.

The washboards can be folded away without having to remove them.

The steering is driven by cables, which are fed from the pedestal (Jefa) to the quadrant.

The engine’s control lever is mounted on the pedestal. The engine control panel is easily reached.
